Standing in front of moss covered wall in Ireland

Europe has always been a dream destination for travelers, offering a rich tapestry of history, culture, and unforgettable experiences. As someone who grew up in Ireland and spent summers in Germany, I’ve been fortunate to explore many of my home continent’s incredible destinations. In this post, I’ll be sharing my top picks for the best European city destinations to visit in 2025.

Whether you’re drawn to the timeless allure of cities like Paris and Rome, the breathtaking natural beauty of the Alpine region, or the sun-soaked coastlines of the Mediterranean, Europe has something for everyone. Later in the post, I’ll also highlight some of my personal favorites in Ireland and Germany—two countries that hold a special place in my heart and offer unique experiences for any traveler.

From iconic landmarks to hidden gems, this guide will help you plan an unforgettable European adventure in 2025. Get ready to be inspired as we explore the top destinations that deserve a spot on your travel itinerary. I have also linked our hotel recommendations for each city.

How to Get to Europe without breaking the bank

Traveling to Europe doesn’t have to drain your savings if you plan wisely. One key to saving money is understanding the difference between peak and shoulder seasons. Peak season, which typically runs from June to August, is when prices for flights and accommodations are at their highest due to the influx of tourists. Shoulder season—spring (March to May) and fall (September to November)—offers a sweet spot for travelers. You’ll enjoy milder weather, fewer crowds, and significantly lower costs.

Affordable airlines can also make a big difference. Many budget carriers, such as Norwegian Air and Aer Lingus, offer reasonably priced flights from the East Coast of the United States to Europe. Consider flying into less obvious destinations like Brussels, Valencia, or Porto. These cities are not only more affordable but also serve as excellent starting points for exploring Europe.

If you’re willing to indulge, adequate planning can also unlock surprisingly good business class fares. Keep an eye out for deals, and if you’ve been racking up those airline miles, consider using them for a more comfortable journey across the Atlantic. However, it’s important to note that flying via the UK often comes with significantly higher taxes and fees, regardless of the cabin you’re in. On the other hand, countries like Belgium have some of the lowest taxes, making cities like Brussels a more cost-effective gateway to Europe.

Once you arrive, Europe’s domestic air travel is much more budget-friendly than in the U.S. Airlines like Ryanair and EasyJet offer flights between major cities and smaller destinations at a fraction of the cost. Alternatively, Europe’s train network is a fantastic way to travel between countries. High-speed trains like the Eurostar and TGV connect major cities, while regional trains provide access to charming towns and countryside.

By mixing and matching affordable flights and Europe’s extensive train system, you can explore the continent without overspending. Whether you’re visiting iconic capitals or discovering hidden gems, careful planning will ensure your journey is both memorable and cost-effective.
